Reports To: Shop Supervisor / Maintenance Manager
Job Summary: The Boilermaker is a skilled tradesperson responsible for the fabrication, assembly, erection, maintenance, and repair of boilers, tanks, vats, and other vessels that hold liquids or gases. This role requires a strong understanding of blueprints, welding techniques, metalworking, and safety protocols. Boilermakers often work in heavy industrial settings such as power plants, refineries, shipyards, and manufacturing facilities, and may be required to work in challenging environments, including confined spaces and at heights.
Key Responsibilities:
Fabrication and Assembly:
- Interpret blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings to determine project specifications and material requirements.
- Layout, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on metal plates, structural shapes, and other boiler components.
- Cut, form, and shape metal using various tools and machinery, including shears, torches, plasma cutters, and bending machines.
- Fit and align boiler components such as drums, tubes, headers, and shells according to design specifications.
- Bolt, weld, or rivet parts together to form boiler sections or other heavy-duty vessels.
Installation and Erection:
- Participate in the rigging and lifting of heavy boiler components into place.
- Align and secure boiler sections during installation, often working with cranes and other heavy equipment.
- Connect water tubes, superheaters, economizers, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Install and repair boiler insulation, refractory, and lagging.
Maintenance and Repair:
- Inspect boilers and other vessels to identify defects such as cracks, leaks, or corrosion.
- Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and testing of boiler systems.
- Perform repairs on boiler tubes, drums, and other components using welding, grinding, and other metalworking techniques.
- Replace worn or damaged parts, including valves, gauges, and safety devices.
- Pressure test repaired or newly installed vessels to ensure structural integrity and leak-free operation.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose boiler malfunctions.
Welding and Metalworking:
- Perform various types of welding (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW) on different types of metals (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, alloys).
- Operate grinding and cutting equipment to prepare surfaces for welding and finish welds.
- Understand and apply proper welding procedures to meet quality and safety standards.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards (e.g., ASME, API, OSHA).
- Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
- Participate in safety briefings and identify potential hazards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Conduct work in confined spaces, at heights, and in hot or noisy environments with strict adherence to safety protocols.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and inspections.
- Report any issues, defects, or safety concerns to the supervisor.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a recognized Boilermaker apprenticeship program or equivalent experience preferred.
- Proven experience as a Boilermaker in an industrial setting.
- Valid welding certifications (e.g., ASME Section IX) are often required or preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Expertise in various welding processes and equipment.
- Knowledge of metal fabrication, rigging, and heavy equipment operation.
- Understanding of boiler systems, pressure vessels, and associated components.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to all regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification.
- Experience with specific boiler types or industrial equipment.
- Certification in rigging and signaling.
Requirements
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, carry, and push heavy objects (often 50+ pounds).
- Comfortable working at heights, on scaffolding, and in confined spaces.
- Manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Tolerance for working in hot, noisy, and sometimes dirty environments.
- Must be able to pass a physical examination and drug screening.
- Must have valid TWIC card
