Description

To perform mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on City water utility facilities and equipment including the repairs of pumps and motors associated with water production, wastewater collections, or wastewater treatment.


Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the entry-level class in the Plant Maintenance Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Plant Maintenance Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series under close supervision. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters relating to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect, diagnose and locate complex mechanical difficulties in City-owned equipment; adjust, repair and/or overhaul the entire spectrum of equipment.
  • Determine extent of necessary repairs; replace and repair faulty or damaged parts; determine repairs beyond the shop capabilities.
  • Participate in a variety of activities including repair, preventive maintenance, and the pickup and delivery of parts.
  • Perform timely and economical repair of City pumping facilities including lift stations and Waste Water Treatment Plant equipment.
  • Repair and/or adjust process control equipment and other equipment related to water production or wastewater facilities.
  • Maintain City facilities, equipment maintenance and other related equipment.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of pump station equipment.
  • Operating and repair characteristics of a full range of City-owned equipment.
  • Modern methods of repair and maintenance of pump station equipment.
  • Operational characteristics of a wide variety of tools and equipment.
  • Safe work practices.


Ability to:

  • Perform the full range of mechanical work including the troubleshooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs.
  • Accurately determine mechanical repair needs.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate and care for a variety of equipment including compressed air tools, valve grinder, brake lathe, tire machine and acetylene and arc welder.
  • Operate and care of manual and power tools and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Lift heavy objects and perform difficult manual labor.


Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:

Two years of responsible experience performing skilled mechanic work in the servicing and repair of pump station equipment. 


Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in pump, motor and electric repair and maintenance.   


License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a Class A CDL or must be able to obtain within six months when requested by supervisor.

  • Frequently required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Occasionally required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently required to climb ladders up to 35 feet high.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • Regularly exposed to vibration.
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
  • Noise level is usually very loud.
