Description

To operate a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of cemetery facilities.  This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Operator series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Equipment Operator I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned under general supervision.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from outside, require directly related work experience.  After gaining knowledge and experience of operations, position can be moved to a higher job classification when an opening becomes available.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of duties including hand and power tools, street roller, welder, backhoe, front-end loader, jackhammer, dump truck, chainsaw, brushhog and tractors.
  • Build/repair fences as assigned.
  • Participate in mixing, pouring and finishing concrete.
  • Clean and maintain order of work areas.
  • Repair tire flats in shop area.
  • Maintain service and repair records on division machinery and equipment.
  • Mow/brush hog in cemetery and park areas.
  • Set up and remove carpets, chairs, tent, pulpit and lowering device for the burial service; reset fallen headstones.
  • Place plywood upon cemetery driveways for burial ceremony during rainy weather.
  • Use monument clamps and lifting devices to move, level and set monuments.
  • Transport machinery and equipment to and from the job site.
  • Repair water lines and faucets within the cemetery and chapel area.
  • Remove refuse from containers within the cemetery.
  • Pallbearer during graveside services.
  • Participate in landscaping cemetery areas; maintain grounds; move and trim lawns; trim vegetation; apply herbicides and pesticides.
  • Participate in chipping wood; collect fallen limbs in cemetery areas.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Proper and safe application of various chemicals including fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.
  • General construction methods and practices.
  • Techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments.
  • Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment.
  • Standard practices and procedures for assigned division.


Ability to:

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Learn the location of various City streets and addresses.
  • Learn the techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments.
  • Lay hot mix asphalt.
  • Perform the physical requirements of the job.
  • Perform work in undesirable or hazardous equipment including inclement weather, confined spaces and improper illumination.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work weekends on a rotating schedule.


Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:

  • Two years experience in construction or related field.
  • One year of experience comparable to that of an Equipment Operator I in the City of Gainesville.


Education/Training:

Formal or informal education that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for job performance.


License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
Must obtain Class "A" CDL within ninety (90) days when requested by supervisor.

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts
  • Regularly exposed to vibration.
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • Noise level is usually very loud.
