Reports To: Lead Mechanic (Tire) or Shop Foreman
Duty Days: 260 days
Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt, 8 hour
Pay Grade: A06
Qualifications:
College hours, high school diploma or GED (preferred)
Three years mechanical experience (or heavy-duty tire work) in vehicle repair and/or other related experience
Able to work productively without continual supervision
Formal training in vehicle repair (preferred)
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
Pass annual physical in accordance with state law
School Bus Driver Certification or able to obtain with six months of hire date
Negative result on drug and/or alcohol tests administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy
Able to communicate in English (written and oral)
Able to read and interpret maps and routes
Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits
Hand tools to be provided by the employee
Primary Purpose:
Capable of making minor mechanical repairs to the district’s fleet. Help provide for a safe and reliable vehicle for the transport of students and employees of Katy ISD. Safely drive students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Department. Safely transport students and staff to and from district sanctioned activities. Always act in the best interest of the district, the students and the community.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Equipment Used:
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles, two-way radios and telephones. School buses, emergency equipment (triangle reflectors, fire extinguisher, bodily fluids kit, etc.)
Working Conditions:
Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling and reaching. Work inside and outside, around moving objects and vehicles. Exposed to heat, dampness, humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel. Prolonged driving and sitting. Frequent walking, standing, twisting, climbing stairs, stooping, bending, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension. Repetitive hand motions, moderate carrying, reaching and capable of lifting 50 lbs. Occasional prolonged hours.
