PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Performs skilled work repairing and maintaining small and large lawn maintenance equipment, various small engine equipment, vehicles and school buses.  To provide mechanical maintenance to all buses and district vehicles so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum and extracurricular program

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education/Certification: 

 

High School Diploma or GED, preferred

Clear driving record

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), recommended

Passenger and School Bus Endorsements, recommended

Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and be insurable

Must be 18 year of age

Must successfully obtain a class B CDL Driver’s License with P-passenger and S-school bus endorsements with 3 months of hire (training provided by McAllen ISD)

 

Special Knowledge/Skills: 

Ability to follow instructions 

Tools, equipment and procedures in the general overhaul, repair and maintenance of small engines, automotive equipment and commercial vehicles 

Record-keeping techniques. 

Engines, maintenance of engines; 2 and 4 cycle engines. Diesel and Gasoline engines. 

 

Experience: 

Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in auto mechanics, required 

 

Workdays:  242

 

Auxiliary Pay Structure:  Pay Grade 8

 

Pay Date:  Monthly

 

Hourly Pay Range:

Minimum:   $20.20

Midpoint:    $24.04

Maximum:  $27.88

 

Note:  Starting pay for a new hire in a pay range plan will be determined individually based on each person's job-related experience and salaries paid to peer employees in the same position with similar experience.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Individual positions may not perform all the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class.
  2. Maintain the school district's motor vehicles: such as trucks, cars, lawn mowers, farm tractors, forklifts, emergency gasoline generators, buses, truck tractors and trailers.
  3. Perform a variety of skilled activities related to the maintenance and mechanical repair of buses, vehicles and other automotive equipment.
  4. Perform preventative maintenance and safety checks on automotive equipment according to established procedures.
  5. Assist in the repairs of differentials, distributors, fuel pumps, radiators, starters, brakes, suspension components, universal joins, hydraulic and air systems, grease and service equipment, mowers, edgers, pumps, compressors, hydraulic rams, sprayers, and generators.
  6. Clean, sharpen, and lubricate a variety of motorized equipment to ensure units are operating safely and correctly.
  7. Fabricate metal parts as needed and/or assigned.
  8. Assist other trade personnel as required.
  9. Operate a variety of automotive tools, welding equipment, and other shop equipment.
  10. Meet Schedules and timelines.
  11. Notify the supervisor immediately of any mechanical condition, which is dangerous to the operation of the vehicle.
  12. Observe safety practices and report any safety hazards.
  13. Wash and clean parts.
  14. Attend in-services and safety meetings.
  15. Assist department in obtaining quotes for equipment and repairs, as needed.
  16. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
  17. Drive bus routes and field trips when assigned.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned tools and equipment.
Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects up to 50lbs.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Standing for extended periods of time.
