DEFINITION:
Under supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled water and wastewater plant maintenance tasks; and performs technical, physical, and complex tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Maintenance Technician I: This is the entry-level in-class series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Technician II by the performance of a limited range of duties. Employees at this level receive close instruction or assistance.
Maintenance Technician II: Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including the ability to perform troubleshooting problems and make repairs with minor supervision. Employees in this class are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility. This position receives general supervision from the Plant Maintenance Superintendent and exercises no supervision.

Special Requirements:
Utilities Department team members are considered essential employees for the community and play a critical role in maintaining and restoring water and wastewater services during emergencies. Team members will be required to be reachable and ready to come to work immediately when a critical situation arises, like severe weather events, power outages, or significant equipment malfunctions, to help manage the response and minimize disruption to operations.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear; use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds unaided. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information, and documents; analyzes and solves problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; performs highly detailed work; deals with multiple concurrent tasks; and interacts with others encountered in the course of work, including frequent contact with customers and/or the public and dissatisfied/abusive individuals.
Work Environment:
Water/Wastewater plant environment; exposure to inclement weather conditions; noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; work around heavy construction equipment. The employee works in an outdoor/field environment subject to high noise level and exposure to extreme weather conditions. Certain positions within the classification may require availability to work flexible schedule or irregular hours.
