Job Description

The Farm Technician, under general supervision, is an essential personnel position responsible for performing semi-skilled, technical support for research work involving assignments that require modification and adaptation of routine procedures. This position will assist in the development of an annual plan of work for activities related to animal care and farm maintenance/management. Work is performed under general supervision, with evaluation based on the successful completion of assigned tasks.

This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.  

Responsibilities:

  • Perform general animal welfare and husbandry activities: feeding, watering, grooming, exercising.

  • Conduct daily animal health and welfare assessments.

  • Assist with training animals for socialization and desensitization.

  • Monitor and treat livestock for disease contraction or prevention.

  • Milk dairy goats daily and communicate health concerns to the care team.

  • Maintain accurate animal activity records, including milk production logs.

  • Assist with preparation and transport of animals to off-site events.

  • Collect samples and measurement data: ruminal fluid, digestibility, degradability, milk samples.

  • Perform and record weights, measurements, and observations of animals.

  • Conduct routine animal health surveillance.

  • Interact with researchers for scheduling and supporting dairy goat experiments.

  • Establish and follow research protocols in coordination with supervisor.

  • Maintain and submit daily animal inspection data for farm management systems.

  • Develop and implement procedures for dairy product creation: cheese, yogurt, ice cream.

  • Produce and monitor quality of dairy products for research and sales.

  • Clean and maintain dairy processing equipment and facilities.

  • Ensure compliance with Department of Health and safety regulations.

  • Assist veterinarian and research staff in medical procedures and health evaluations.

  • Support routine and emergency treatments for animals.

  • Train staff and student workers in animal health and welfare practices.

  • Perform maintenance on farm buildings, fences, feeders, pens, and gates.

  • Conduct general cleanliness and upkeep of animal housing areas.

  • Operate farm and landscape equipment: tractors, pickups, skid steers, augers, loaders.

  • Perform minor mechanical, carpentry, and welding work.

  • Ensure maintenance or repair orders are processed for external vendors as needed.

  • Maintain inventory and organization of farm and animal facility supplies.

  • Order supplies and materials as needed to support operations.

  • Assist in training research technicians and student employees.

  • Provide guidance and technical expertise to staff on farm and research protocols.

  • Maintain compliance documentation for research, safety, and health standards.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot technical equipment used in research settings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Three years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  •  Bachelor's degree in Animal, pre-vet, or Related Sciences.

  • Some experience working with Poultry husbandry, slaughtering, processing, fabrication.

  • Some experience in laboratory procedures.

  • Prior experience in conducting research.

  • Ability to communicate orally and to be able to write manuscripts.

  • Previous experience working with animals.

  • Be able to statistically analyze research data.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.

  • Ability to exert heavy force.

  • May work in various weather condition and work weekends.
