PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide effective coordination, oversight, and leadership for the daily operations of the transportation maintenance shop and its personnel to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the district's fleet in support of student and staff transportation for San Marcos CISD.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Associate’s Degree preferred

ASE Master Certification desired

Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement

Texas School Bus Driver Certification

Certified Drug/Alcohol Awareness Program Supervisor (Preferred)

Accident Investigation Training

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work cooperatively with people and manage personnel

Computer skills- Internet, Microsoft word, excel, outlook, google suite

Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair

Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to access and use service materials

Able to perform mechanical repairs with no supervision

Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam

 

Experience:

3 years of mechanical experience

Three years of supervisory experience, preferred

Previous experience as maintenance supervisor, preferred

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

  1. Supervise the shop, the major and minor mechanical repairs, and the preventative maintenance of buses and other district vehicles.
  2. Supervise, the rebuild, replacement, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
  3. Arrange contract repairs when work cannot be performed in the shop.
  4. Perform major and minor mechanical repairs on and preventative maintenance on buses and other district vehicles.
  5. Supervise and implement preventive maintenance and care schedules and perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
  6. Oversee records on parts used, labor time, and cost of each repair job; and review and approve completed work orders.
  7. Assist the Director in preparing and maintaining the shop budget.
  8. Assist the Director in recruiting, screening, training, and evaluating shop employees and in training new drivers in the mechanics of vehicles.
  9. Supervise shop employees.
  10. Maintain accurate information for payroll reporting (time cards, tardies, absences, etc.).
  11. Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
  12. Order equipment and supplies, recommend replacement of equipment, and maintain accurate records.
  13. Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.
  14. Oversee the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot areas.
  15. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  16. Maintain accurate and current records of vehicle maintenance and repairs performed.
  17. Available for after hours and weekend work as needed.
  18. Maintain proficiency with upgraded fleet vehicles.
  19. Responsible for the upkeep, repair, replacement, and protection of personal tools.
  20. Assist with the investigation of all district vehicle accidents; complete and submit all related reports.
  21. Assists in the development and production of departmental manuals and operating procedures.
  22. Facilitate effective communication with parents, school personnel, and students.
  23. Demonstrates thoroughness, reliability and a high degree of accuracy in performing work assignments.
  24. Demonstrates initiative and good judgment in problem solving and decision making.
  25. Assess road conditions and advise administration on inclement weather or safety concerns that may require delays or school closures.
  26. Demonstrates tact, courtesy and helpfulness in dealing with staff, students, parents, and visitors to the district.
  27. Accepts supervisory discretion.
  28. Maintain good rapport with students, parents, campuses, and the community to optimize services and resolve conflicts.
  29. Promote a positive image that supports the mission of the school district.
  30. Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification.
  31. Participate in professional development opportunities, including training sessions and certifications related to pupil transportation.
  32. Operate the bus as needed.
  33. Supervise, monitor, direct, and evaluate the performance of transportation staff as directed.
  34. Perform other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; district vehicle; school bus.

 

Posture:  Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

 

Lifting:  Heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds or more) on a daily basis. 

 

Environment:  Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical hazards; work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district wide travel; occasional statewide travel; School district employees may be require to work from home and use their personal electronic devices

 

Mental Demands:  Work with frequent interruptions; Maintain emotional control under stress
