Job Summary

Under general supervision, provides manual labor to ensure the timely construction, repair, and maintenance of the City’s Park system. This position also performs routine maintenance of athletic fields and turf. This includes, but is not limited to: mowing, fertilizing, spraying, painting, and irrigating.  Supports special events. Takes explicit direction from departmental supervision and carries out duties in accordance with established policies and procedures; exercises moderate levels independent judgement and initiative.  Interacts frequently with department personnel and the external public.

Essential Job Functions and Other Important Duties

  • Construct and maintain assigned right of ways and City park grounds; mow, trim, edge, plant, water, and fertilize ground covering and shrubs; plant and trim trees; pick up litter and other debris.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on the City park buildings and equipment; minor plumbing, painting, sandblasting, light welding, replacing light bulbs, repairing park benches, etc.
  • Respond to park patron routine inquiries and enforce park rules and regulations.
  • Maintain City tools and equipment in safe and effective operating condition; make minor repairs and adjustments as necessary; report unsafe or inoperable equipment to department management.
  • May be assigned temporarily to other departments to provide related support.
  • Maintain City pool and pool equipment; brush, vacuum, check chemicals levels, and inspect equipment for safe operation; make minor repair and adjustments as directed
  • Performs rounds of park facilities including restrooms to pick up trash, empty trashcans, and inspect areas for damage and vandalism of city assets.
  • Remains accessible via personal cell phone to address job-related issues or emergencies using City applications.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Formal Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Relatable Work Experience: Six (6) months of experience in maintenance, grounds, parks, general labor, landscaping or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Training, Licenses, and Certifications: Valid Class C Texas driver’s license.

Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is define as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed & Environmental Factors and Other Physical Requirements

Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with external public/vendors, internal management and non-management employees, and City and other government officials.
Ability to develop, implement, and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for providing effective and efficient services for the City.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, as well as strong time and task management skills.
Ability to understand verbal and written work instructions in English.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and otherwise interface with external public.
Ability to safely operate and maintain vehicles, equipment, and tools and to understand all related operating instructions
Ability to effectively and safely operate light trucks, tractors with shredders, lawn tractors, weed eaters, trailers, shop tools, and various hand tools.
Ability to operate light/heavy equipment and perform basic and preventive maintenance on tools & equipment.
Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an Outdoor environment year round; extreme weather conditions.
Exposure to potentially hazardous materials.
Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment
Ability to perform strenuous and continuous physical activity, including walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, and digging in various weather conditions
Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
Regularly scheduled for 5-day, 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday; overtime occasionally required.
