Description

Performs specialized work such as engine overhauls, electrical system repairs, transmission repairs, and hydraulic system diagnosis and repair. Performs welding and fabrication assignments as needed. Perform all service work as assigned and make road calls as required.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competence and satisfactory performance of these duties. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles
  2. Maintenance and repair of ignition, carburetion/injection, cooling, braking, steering, and suspension systems
  3. Estimates routine costs of repairs
  4. Tests equipment and vehicles to ensure safe and efficient operation
  5. Utilizes electronic and routine test equipment to diagnose equipment and vehicles
  6. Use of hand and power tools, acetylene torch, grinder and other related mechanical and specialized equipment
  7. Preheats, cleans, and prepares metal for priming, undercoating, and painting
  8. Responsible for regular attendance and arriving to work on time
  9. Other duties as required by the Garage Superintendent

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  1. Good knowledge of the methods and materials used in the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and specialized equipment
  2. Good knowledge of operations, functions, and common malfunctions of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and specialized equipment
  3. Good knowledge of the air conditioning systems of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and specialized equipment
  4. Good knowledge of related diagnostic equipment
  5. Ability to read and interpret technical data from manuals, diagrams, schematics, read work orders and keep simple records
  6. Ability to use hand and power tools and electronic diagnostic equipment Ability to train, direct, and supervise the work of subordinate employees
  7. Ability to schedule, assign, direct, supervise and inspect activities and operations of employees to ensure safe, efficient, and proper quality of work in the absence of the superintendent

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a High School Diploma/G.E.D.
  • Must obtain Class “A” CDL with Haz-Mat endorsements within 1 year
  • Must provide own hand tools for daily operations. The City of Denison will provide tools for specialized operations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate welding proficiency for metal fabrications. Structural welding certification desired.
  • Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor (over 50 lbs)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ASE certification or vocational technical training for light duty and medium diesel and gasoline powered vehicles preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
