Scope of Work

This position reports to the Manager over Garage. Will maintain and repair city automobiles and trucks.

Essential Job Duties

· Determines the appropriateness of off-sit repairs such as oil and filter changes, tires, and mufflers front end alignments and engine replacements, body work and upholstery repairs.

· Inspects vehicles and trailers for state inspection stickers.

· Determines readiness and fitness of new vehicles; installs special equipment.

· Employee must provide own hand tools and a toolbox. City supplies major equipment including power tools, computerized analyzers, and other diagnostic equipment.

· Ability to read schematics, electrical diagrams, manuals and other specifications in order to make repairs.

· Performs emergency repairs for various departments. (service calls)

· Repairs and maintains all city light duty trucks and cars and mowers, trailers, and various special equipment.

· Repairs will include suspensions, brakes, electrical components different engine parts, fuel pumps, hydraulic lift gates, generators, small engine repairs, engine diagnostics, ac repairs, engine repairs, electrical troubleshooting and repairs and any repair item that is assigned by shop management.

· Priority repairs will be made as soon as possible to police and fire department vehicles and equipment.

· Ability to properly log in to their workstation and input the thorough notes on the repairs that were done which will also include the parts that have been charged out and installed

· Change out different fluids and oils and filters in order to complete the repairs.

· Cleans and maintains shop facilities, equipment tools and grounds.

· Performs other related duties as required and assigned by shop management.

· Repair all light duty emergency vehicles to include police vehicles, ambulances, and fire squads and or any fire light duty SUV’s and trucks.

· Prepare used vehicles for auctions which includes removing all decals lights, accessories and sirens if equipped (police and fire department)

· Assist the heavy side when needed with light duty repairs

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building and vehicle-to-vehicle. Able to drive vehicles to and from different worksites. Employee will work in extreme temperatures bending, kneeling, twisting and climbing in order to make repairs on vehicles or equipment. Employee can work with mechanical, biological, chemical and electrical hazards while repairing vehicles and equipment. Employee is also to perform heavy lifting of machinery and parts frequently. Safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves are provided.

Required Qualifications

Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management, and vendors in order to diagnose repairs and order materials for repair. Employee also communicates with other employees from different departments.

Knowledge of proper tools used in welding and fabricating parts and equipment. Ability to safely use tools, vehicles and equipment such as emissions and battery testers, electronic handheld diagnostic equipment and brake lathes, bench grinders, lifts and jacks, air conditioning and recovery systems, trucks, tractors, forklifts, and hand tools such as air tools and welding and cutting torches. Skill in reading and practical application of manuals, schematic, electrical diagrams, and other similar specifications used by the city. Ability to read, measure, and calculate types and sizes of materials needed and ability to reason amount of time that will be used in fabrication process. The ability to use a laptop and be able to navigate through work orders and check emails.

Required Qualifications

 High school diploma or GED required. Prefer a degree from a technical school or up to three years training as a mechanic or in a related field ASE certified preferred but not required. Valid Texas Class A CDL Driver's License not required but preferred. A valid Texas Class C driver’s license is required. Texas Department of Public Safety Inspector Certificate required within one year of employment.
